Getting Your Car Ready for Summer

This month's blog is coming to you from our guest blogger, Daniel Harris. Check out all of his tips on getting your car ready for summer.

Getting Your Car Ready for Summer

Most people understand the importance of getting your car for winter.  However, most people do not realize that it is equally important to prepare your vehicle for summer.  Here are a few things you can do to make sure your car is properly equipped for this coming summer.

Clean it Up

The first thing to do after a long and dreary winter is to clean the outside of the car up.  Due to harsh winter conditions, the outside of your car will take a beating aesthetically.  Now that its summer and the weather is nicer, you will want to show off how gorgeous your car can be when it’s not being rained/snowed on all day.

You can start by washing the body of the car.  A simple car was will go a long way, but to really get rid of the extra dirt and grime it may require a deep hand wash.  This is also a good time to clean up the rims.  This will all be somewhat labor intensive, but when the natural shine of your car’s paintjob and rims starts to come through it will make it all worth it.

It is important to protect all your hard work by going the extra mile and waxing your car as well.  Doing so at the beginning of the season will ensure that your car is protected all summer long.  If you do not have a garage to park in, parking in shaded areas during the summer will help protect your car against sun damage.

While you have the hose out, it would be wise to make sure to wash the undercarriage of the car as well.  The reason for this is that the salt that is used to make the roads safer during winter can accumulate on the bottom of your vehicle and cause rusting.  Simply washing the bottom of the car with a hose or sprinkler will be very helpful in protecting it against corrosion.

Change/Inspect Tires

One of the more obvious things to do is getting rid of your winter tires.  While this is obvious, it does not mean people always do it immediately.  It is important to do this as soon as possible because winter tires are more vulnerable to the dry hot pavements encountered during summer.

Even if you have all-season tires which do not require changing, it is still important to check their tread.  This is because tires may be worn down from trying to stop in harsh winter driving conditions or damaged from driving on snow removing salt.

Check Fluids, Battery and Radiator

Another thing to do when preparing your vehicle for summer is to check the levels of all fluids.  It is especially important to check the level of coolant as this will be needed to run the air conditioner (which usually comes in handy in the summer).

You will also want to take a look at your battery.  Although many people believe it is winter and the cold that kills your battery, the extreme heats of summer are what will shorten battery life.  To help protect your battery against this you can make sure it is clean (by using baking soda and warm water) and free of corrosion.  It is also a good idea to clean the terminals using a wire brush.

Last but certainly not least, you will want to check your radiator.  The radiator (along with the afore-mentioned coolant) is responsible for cooling your car down.  As you can imagine, this is particularly important during hot summer months.  Make sure to check the radiator for any leaks or broken hoses as these issues can lead to disaster during the heat of summer.

These are just a few of the basic steps you can take to ensure that your vehicle is prepared for the upcoming summer.  The extreme heats that can occur during summer months can have damaging effects on your car.  While the importance of preparing your car for winter is more widely known, the steps necessary to prepare your car for summer are equally important

2013 Hyundai Sonata Ranked Most Dependable Car of The Year!

Hyundai owners know that their vehicles are dependable and will last a long time with only minimal repairs and maintenance, but J.D. Power has released a series of rankings.  Every year, J.D. Power and associates releases their list of the 14 most dependable cars and trucks, categorized into by size and type of vehicle.  The J.D. Power rankings are highly anticipated by both the auto industry and consumers because they help clarify which cars are the most well made, and which cars need changes and improvements in order to be dependable.  In 2013, the 2010 Hyundai Sonata was ranked first out of all mid-sized sedans.

The vehicles are ranked on a range of factors over a period of 12 months.  J.D. Powers and Associates pick vehicles that will be three years old by the end of the study in order to determine particular models long term dependability. This year the Hyundai Sonata beat out the Ford Focus at second place, and the Buick LeSabre at third place, for the number one score.

This is the second year in a row that a Hyundai has been the highest ranked midsize sedan in the J.D Power Dependability rankings.  Last year the 2009 Hyundai beat out all of the competitors.  This should come as no surprise to Hyundai owners who have come to relay on the dependability of their vehicles.

As a mid-sized Sedan, the Hyundai Sonata is known for its great features and excellent design.  The 2013 Hyundai Sonata adds a number of excellent features and qualities including the Theta ii GDI 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that features a Gasoline Directed-Injected (GDI) fuel delivery system, which has greatly improved gas mileage over previous models; where the base 2.4-liter engine offers up to 200 horsepower, and the optional 2.0-liter turbocharged engine marshals a whopping 274 horses.  We can remember when only high-strung performance machines like the Mitsubishi Lance Evolution made that kind of power with the 2.0-liter inline-4. Fuel economy is stellar as well, reaching in the mid-30’s mpg range with either engine.

Has any other automaker gone from imitator to innovator this quickly? That’s what the 2013 Hyundai Sonata midsized sedan has us wondering.  It was only a few years ago that Hyundais came across as Korean –flavored interpretations of more established cars, but now every new family sedan seems to be taking cues from Korea’s finest.

Let’s start with the Sonata’s bold “fluidic sculpture” design language, which truly looks like nothing else on the road.  It was revolutionary when the Sonata debuted in 2010, a breath of fresh air in a segment notorious for stale styling.  Since then, we’ve seen the Nissan Altima get all swoopy for its latest redesign, and the new Ford Fusion’s physique has likewise been streamlined.   Yes, that’s right: Hyundai set the trend, and the others followed suit.

Even fiercely independent Honda pays homage to Hyundai these days, as the new Accord’s taillights look like they were lifted straight off Hyundai Genesis luxury sedan.

Naturally, Hyundai hasn’t gotten everything about the Sonata right overnight. But when you take all of the Sonata’s strong points and add Hyundai’s traditional value advantage to the mix, it’s no wonder other automakers are suddenly scrambling to keep up.

May service and tire info and news/specials

You may have seen this week about that terrible Missouri accident which killed some Jacksonians. Media reports blamed it on underinflated and/or improperly sized tires.   Under-inflated tires create more rolling resistance, therefore more heat and are more susceptible to blow-outs.... which can cause fatal loss of control at high speeds.  Hot summer-time pavement heat makes this worse...so let us check your tire pressure for free as well as 26 other things on your vehicle before you go on vacation.

During May, we have great tire and service specials at our Lakeland Drive Kia and Hyundai service departments as well as our newest store, The Wilson Premier Collection, on Interstate 55 North in Ridgeland.

$299 will get you a complete set of 4 tires, mounted, balanced and all taxes and tire disposal fees paid.  We have an aggressive new supplier of quality Hankook, Kelly, Kumho, Nexen, Bridgestone, Michelin, Goodyear and other tires and have negotiated great prices based upon our combined volume of all our stores.  I dare you to compare our prices with anyone (in any city) on our tires.   Of course, sizes vary and so will prices but we intend to offer the best tires with the lowest prices!

Plus get a FREE 27+ point inspection with our $23.95 Oil Change before you hit the road going on SUMMER Vacation.

In addition, we have over $3,000,000 worth of used cars at our Lakeland Drive and Wilson Premier Collection locations.  From a $6900 first car for that special graduate to a $69,000 2011 BMW 750iL we just acquired...we have something for you.  Please check our website (http://www.wilsonpremiercollection.com/ and http://www.wilsonautos.com/ ) frequently because used cars are turning fast and our inventory changes daily.  Or call us at (601)856-NICE or (601)914-4200.
We have at least 27 photos, full descriptions and special internet prices on all our pre-owned vehicles.  And every used vehicle we sell carries our 48 hour Satisfaction Guarantee, 165 point inspection and our free 3 month/3000 mile warranty in addition to remaining factory warranty.

2012 is going to be a great year!  Just this week, I was reminded of what happened to us 3 years ago (May 14, 2009) when Chrysler was in bankruptcy and terminated my Dodge franchise.  I made a decision not to whine or cry about it but instead look at what I DID have (not what I lost) and "get with it" with Kia and Hyundai.   Call it LUCK or what you will, its been the best thing that has ever happened to me and our company.  But we couldn't have done it without YOU, our customer and friend.

We appreciate you and hope these service specials help show it. Bryan at Premier (601)856-NICE or Russ at Lakeland (601)914-4200 would be glad to set you up with a convenient time to come in and let our factory-trained technicians service your vehicle properly.
.
We look forward to serving you and helping you solve your transportation problems.

10 car care tips

Doug Wilson’s Video on Car Maintenance
10 Things On Your Car That Need Maintenance

This is a video too...find it at  http://youtu.be/BlWG9Y13Xio

Your car is a complex mechanical product made up of many different systems. Unlike a vase you sit on a table, it operates outdoors, in the heat – or cold – in the rain, dust and other elements. Many people think just changing their oil is maintaining their car – it is your engine – but your car has many other mechanical parts that need maintenance as well. Let me discuss 10 things that you need to maintain as well as the reason why:

  1. Motor Oil: Simply put, motor oil degrades over time, with the additive package becoming depleted and the oil becoming contaminated with debris. Recommended oil chance intervals vary by manufacturer, but the simple truth is that all vehicles – even hybrids- require oil changes. At Wilson Auto Group we suggest every 5,000 miles because it’s so easy to remember.

  1. Air Filter: Your engine’s air filter screens harmful dust and debris, keeping it from getting inside the engine and potentially causing life-shortening damage. But like the air filter inside your home, it eventually becomes clogged with dust and needs to be replaced so your engine can breathe freely and generate the power it was designed to.

  1. Coolant: The mixture of coolant/anti-freeze/water inside your engine will eventually see its additive package become depleted and lose some of its ability to protect your car’s engine from the extreme summer heat and bone-chilling winter cold. Even though many modern vehicles don’t require a coolant change for the first five years, the truth is that at some point almost every vehicle will require multiple coolant changes during its lifetime.

  1. Tires: Yep, even your tires need maintenance. Pretty much every owner’s manual for every vehicle on the road recommends rotating tires and checking tire pressure every so often. Doing so can extend the tread life, keeping you from having to buy a new set quite as soon. Out of balance tires are not only uncomfortable but impede fuel economy and make your tires wear out faster.

  1. Transmission fluid: It doesn’t matter weather your car has an automatic manual or continuously variable transmission (CVT), most automakers recommend replacing the fluid that protects the transmission at some point during the vehicle’s life. And for vehicles driven in tough conditions or that carry heavy loads, the transmission fluid likely requires changing more frequently.

  1. Brakes: Take a piece of metal and rub it vigorously with a hard semi-metallic compound and tiny pieces of both objects will erode. Now do that hundreds of times each day, hundreds of days each year. That’s your brakes at work. Eventually, all that eroding will require that both the brake pads/shoes and the rotors/drums will need to be replaced. It can be pricy, buy you can’t put a price tag on the ability to stop with you need to!

  1. Spark Plugs: Time was when automakers recommended new spark plugs about every 30,000 miles. These days, you might have to replace the spark plugs in your car once during its lifetime, but it’s a service tat most automakers still recommend at certain intervals.

  1. Wiper Blades: They’re stuck on your windshield day after day, in the hot sun or freezing snow. Eventually, the rubber blades of your windshield wipers will begin to degrade. When that happens, it’s time for new ones.

  1. Fuel Injection System: Although this isn’t generally a factory recommended service, the simple fact is that the ultra-fine injectors used to spray fuel into your car’s engine are susceptible to even the tiniest bits of debris. An interruption in the perfectly designed spray pattern of your injectors can cost you at the pump, which is why to ensure you’re getting the best mileage possible, many experts recommend a fuel injection cleaning service at periodic intervals.

  1. Cabin Air Filter: Even the inside of your car has an item that needs maintenance. Most modern vehicles are equipped with a special filter that screens the air coming into the passenger compartment. These filters can keep out odors. But just like your engine air filter, these filters will need to be periodically replaced, generally on an annual basis.

There you have it, 10 items on your vehicle that will generally need maintenance at some point or another. Take care of these items, and chances are your car will take care of you for many miles to come.

You are important to us and that's why we want to share some free car-care tips applicable to any make or model vehicle. Scroll all the way to the bottom for great coupons.

Car Wash/Appearance Tips:  With warm weather (and pollen), you’ll want to wash your car more. One of the biggest errors I see when folks wash their own car is not thoroughly rinsing the car before washing.  Assume that your vehicle is covered in grit (it is) and rinse it thoroughly to prevent scratching the clearcoat.  Use an old bath towel, a bucket (or ice chest works well and cleans the ice chest too) and Dawn dish wash soap (cuts thru greasy road film best).  Soap is a base which neutralizes acid if you remember from high school chemistry.  Acid rain is a problem in MS and will “etch” your paint if not neutralized periodically with a base (soap).  Buy some “simple green” and spray on the wheels, chrome or bugs and you will save a lot of rubbing.  Rinse the car thoroughly (from the top down) to remove all soap.  If it is really hot or bright sunlight…wash the vehicle in sections to prevent soap drying and “etching” the paint.
You Don’t need expensive Armour-ALL:  Use Baby Oil on the tires, plastic, leather and vinyl…inside and out for the same effect at a fraction of the cost.  Baby oil is simply mineral oil with a fragrance, so if you are really cheap or don’t like artificial smells, like me, you can buy plain mineral oil real cheap.  It’s great for leather couches and things inside your home too.  Safe enough for a baby’s bottom…it won’t hurt your vinyl, leather, plastic or tires.
US vehicle median age set a record high in 2011:  According to RL Polk data, Americans are keeping their vehicles longer.  Median age for passenger cars increased to a record high of 10.8 years.  Light truck scrappage rate increased to 6.4%.  Consumers are keeping their vehicles longer and paying higher repair costs to keep the vehicle going.  Assuming 15,000 miles driven per year, a 10.8  year old vehicle would have 162,000 miles on it. Read more at https://www.polk.com/company/news/average_age_of_vehicles_reaches_record_high_according_to_polk

January News

Up 87% in Kia sales!  Up 45% in Hyundai sales!  What more can we say except....THANK YOU!  2011 was a great year for Wilson Auto Group and we look forward to serving our customers in 2012.  With over 1000 new Kia's and Hyundai's sold, Wilson Kia and Wilson Hyundai on Lakeland Drive is one of the largest Kia/Hyundai dealerships in the nation.  We are so thankful for your support and business.

One of our highlights of 2011 was opening our high-line used car operation at the former Paul Moak location on I-55 and Steed.  We opened The Wilson Premier Collection in November and the response has been phenomenal.  We will be having a grand opening all month during January and invite you to stop by and just look around and see all the nice nearly new Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, Infiniti, Acura as well as nearly new Hyundai's and Kia's.  Our service team is EXCELLENT there and we invite you to try it out.  We service all makes and models but specialize in highline, Kia and Hyundai.
http://www.wilsonpremiercollection.com/

In other news, we started Saturday service in June and discontinued it recently because of lack of support.  It just was not being used by our customers and my workers were here an extra day but mostly standing around for lack of cars being brought in.  We may try it again at a later date but it would seem that folks value their Saturdays too much to spend them getting their cars serviced.

2011 brought many new models to our showrooms.  This time last year we didn't have the all new Hyundai Elantra, the beautiful Equus luxury car, the Sonata Hybrid or the sporty new Veloster.  Likewise, we hadn't gotten the all new Kia Optima mid-size sedan or the Forte 5 Door or the all new Rio small car.  We are so thankful for Kia (http://www.kia.com/  )and Hyundai (http://www.hyundai.com/ ) and the great vehicles they are building and their generous 10year/100,000 mile warranty.  And most of our Kia's and Hyundai's are built right here in the deep south in West Point Georgia and Montgomery, Alabama.

Please let me know if I can be of service.

We opened The Wilson Premier Collection in November and the response has been phenomenal.
www.wilsonpremiercollection.com

We are so thankful for Kia (www.kia.com )and Hyundai (www.hyundai.com) and the great vehicles they are building and their generous 10year/100,000 mile warranty.  And most of our Kia's and Hyundai's are built right here in the deep south in West Point Georgia and Montgomery, Alabama.

Please let me know if I can be of service.

September News

August was a tough month with the debt ceiling crisis threatening to cast the USA into default on our $14Trillion dollar debt, the resultant WILD swings in the stock market and fresh threats of a new recession.  However, Wilson Hyundai and Wilson Kia on Lakeland persevered and had a great month with over 135 new and used vehicles sold.  Thank You.

Our used car department has really perked up with all these nice, clean, low-mileage trade-ins we are recieving due to the "hot" nature of our Kia and Hyundai product lines.  Our full used car inventory with prices, 20+ photos and more can be seen at http://www.wilsonautogroup.com/

We are excited as we head into September with a fresh shipment of 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV's that we have specially priced at only $19,995.  That is unheard of in the car business....SUV's for under $20,000!  And these are not left-over 2011's...brand new 2012's, automatic, air, tilt and cruise, power windows, power door locks...even am/fm/CD/Satellite stereo system and our famous 10yr/100,000 mile warranty....all for just $19,995...and we have several AT THAT PRICE.  Not one stripped model.  Several, fully equipped and all on sale in September at the advertised price of just $19,995!

Wilson Kia is also having a sale on SUV's...our famous, MADE IN THE USA, 2012 Kia Sorento with 7 PASSENGER SEATING (3rd row of seats), automatic, air, power windows and door locks, tilt and cruise plus a great stereo system with CD/am/FM and Satellite radio.  All for the low price of just $23,995.  Try finding a 7 passenger SUV for that price.   And we have 38 Kia Sorento's to choose from.

Thank you for all your support.  Please email me if I may be of service at doug@wilsonautos.com

July Newspost

June ends and so does the first half of 2011.  Hard to believe this year is half over already!

Wilson Hyundai's YTD sales are up over 43% over 2010 while Wilson Kia's sales are up a whopping 113%.  Our product lineup of fuel efficient small to mid-size sedans and SUV's are just what the market wants right now.

We are so thankful for all our faithful friends, loyal customers and our enthusiastic employees who have made this year our best ever in the automobile business.  It is fun to be a Kia and Hyundai dealer right now and we have something going for us that is very precious....MOMENTUM and a CAN DO attitude.

June 2009 was a dark time in our country as we were in the throes of a serious recession and both GM and Chrysler were in bankruptcy.  Locally, my Dodge franchise was terminated at a very precarious time after over 20 years as a Dodge dealer...being the #1 Dodge dealer in the entire state of MS for 15 of those years.
Now, with the advantage of hindsight, all I can say is THANK YOU.   What some meant as evil towards our company has turned into the best thing that has ever happened and we are so grateful.   In the bible, Romans 8:28 says "God works all things out for good for those that love Him and are called according to His purposes"   I think I could be a walking/talking real life example of that.   We are so blessed and thankful.

Hyundai is building a great car.  The Hyundai Sonata, Hyundai Elantra, Santa Fe and Tucson are all hot sellers.  The all new 2012 Hyundai Accent is just now arriving (40 mpg!!) and we have them introductory special priced starting at just $14,995....with AC and Power windows!  The all new luxury flagship, Equus, is selling well...I never thought we'd be selling $60,000 sedans at full price with no incentives but this car offers so much value at $30,000 less than a comparably equipped Lexus LS460, it is apparent to smart shoppers.

On the Kia side, the USA built (in the deep south in a brand new, technologically advanced 2200 acre plant in West Point, GA) 2012 Kia Sorento is selling well.  Now with an improved gasoline direct injection engine that produces "BEST IN CLASS" fuel economy, we are certain that it will do even better in its second year.  We have over 40 brand new Sorento's to choose from and a July special running for just $249 a month.

Kia Soul and Kia Forte both have been stellar sellers as well.  With Kia Motors Finance aggressive lending and our good relationship with them, we are getting "less than perfect" credit buyers financed with a nationwide company at great rates without all the subprime hassles.  Apply online at www.mscarloans.com or our website www.wilsonkia.com  .   We would love to help you.

Thank you again to all our customers, friends, employees and citizens for your support.  Whether you bought a car from us or just said a nice word about us to someone in the market; we appreciate you.

Please call on me personally if I may be of service in your transportation needs.

Sincerely,
Doug Wilson

April News

Wilson Auto Group sales were up 46% over February 2011 and up 57% over March 2010.  YTD our Hyundai sales are up 27% over last years first quarter and our Kia sales are up a whopping 208%!

I just got back from Las Vegas and the Hyundai National Dealer meeting.  What an inspired and excited dealer body!  I believe 90% of all Hyundai dealers were there and the atmosphere with Hyundai's new products, fuel efficiency leadership and sales momentum was electrifying!

Our newest baby, Accent, will be for sale in a few weeks along with the new Sonata Hybrid, giving Wilson Hyundai two more 40 MPG vehicles.  Veloster will follow this summer and it is quite impressive in person...another 40 MPG hit coming soon.

April is destined to be a great month as gas prices have car shoppers thinking small to med-sized cars/SUV's which is the heart of our product line-up.  New Sonata's start at just $19,990 and new Tucson's are only $19,995....under $20,000 for a fuel efficient, roomy, safe and reliable Crossover SUV!  AND...Wilson Hyundai has our best-ever selection of Tucson's.

Kia continues to have tremendous sales momentum and will set records in April with our largest selection ever of the hot-selling Kia Sorento SUV.  Produced here in the deep south in West Point, Georgia, Sorento gets 29 MPG and is priced under $20,000!   With the room, 5 star safety ratings, 10yr/100,000 mile warranty and great styling....Kia Sorento can't be beat and has been named by a promient consumer magazine as its "TOP FAMILY SUV"....ahead of Honda CRV, Toyota and Nissan.

Wilson Kia has a huge selection and they are all sale priced in April to "turn and earn".  In addition, the fuel efficient Kia Forte is sale priced in April for ZERO down and just $269 per month.  We are encouraging customers to take advantage of a return to the market of major sub-prime/near-prime lenders.  With Forte's $1000 rebate used as down payment, we expect to put a record number of Forte drivers behind the wheel with low payments of just $269 per month.

In addition, the all-new Kia Optima is arriving in greater quantities and we are sellling them literally as they arrive off the truck.

Call us at (601)914-4200 or browse our entire inventory at http://www.wilsonautos.com/

We expect a record April as we drive towards a fantastic year at Wilson Auto Group.  Consumer confidence has returned, gas prices have given lots a new reason to trade and lenders have loosened up...how could this not be a great month?
